Solar drip irrigation for smallholder vegetable farms

Replacing diesel pumps with 4-inch brushless DC solar pumps to irrigate smallholder vegetable plots year-round.

The challenge

A farmer cooperative relied on small petrol and diesel pumps lifting water from shallow boreholes. Fuel costs consumed a large share of harvest income, deliveries were unreliable during the rainy season, and pumps broke down in the dry season — exactly when irrigation mattered most.

Our solution

We supplied matched solar kits: 4LSD multistage DC solar pumps with MPPT controllers, dry-run probes and full-tank float switches, sized to each borehole's yield report. Water is pumped by day into raised tanks that gravity-feed drip lines, so no batteries are needed.

The result

Each site now irrigates without fuel. Farmers extended cultivation into the dry season, and the cooperative standardised on one pump family, so spare parts and training are shared across every member farm.
